Podcast Key Notes

Can you pleases introduce yourself and tell us about your background –

My name is Kema Opeyemi Abuede popularly known as Cake Priest. I am from Delta State. I studied Mass Communication at Auchi Federal Polytechnics, Edo State. This is my 14th year in the cake industry and I am married with 2 kids.

Starting days of the business

My cake making career actually started in 2005, while I was waiting to be admitted into higher institution, my elder brother (who’s late now) was the one who pulled me into the industry while doing his industrial training at Cakes by Tosan. I worked with Mr Tosan for 7  years… (Listen to the podcast to hear the full details).

In your opinion, which of the cake making departments seems the easiest and most lucrative?

Lucrative – that would be the molding section where a lot of creativity is needed. For me, it is the most difficult aspect of cake making process. (Listen to the podcast to learn more about cake making sections).

What are the courses and fees at your cake school?

Well it depends on what one is coming for. For baking classes, it is about 100k, molding classes, about 150k and wedding cake classes is about 170k to mention a few.

What steps have you taken to ensure  your brand grows and remains competitive?

My watchword; make your brand relevant and stay in business by being in the spotlight. So I would say it’s my creativity and me not jumping  on the bandwagon. I try to be in my lane and create one a kind designs.

What piece of business advice would you give someone starting up?

  • The industry is very lucrative, but don’t just dabble into it because you think people in it are making big money; no it’s more than that!
  • You have to love the job, be committed and ready to learn. You need to research properly to catch up with the pace of the players in the industry as it is now.
  • “The sky is broad and high enough for any eagle that wants to soar in it” that’s how the industry is – there’s room for everybody, but you have to work for it and earn it.

Tell us one thing about you people don’t really know?

I don’t get myself worried; I don’t beat myself up over things.
